Given that this is a d20 campaign on a forum based setting, part if not half of the entire thing will involve rolls and skill checks to determine the actions and reactions of our characters. This thread will serve as an example to refer to when making posts that have skill checks and the such in them.
Example 1
Skill Check
The gnome sits on top of a crate on top of a chair, looking over everyone he was playing against. As subtly as he could, he lowered his hands into his lap to discreetly remove that hidden card up his sleeve so that he might win this round.
Skill Check Sleight of Hand.
8 (nat.) + 6 (skill) = 15.
To which the DM would respond to with everyone's perception against a DC of 15, and write out in his post if anyone noticed. It is up to the DM whether or not he wants to reveal his rolls to the group.
Example 2
Combat Round
(A call out in skype would sound for initiative checks before combat begins, to keep from an entire round of posting being required just to get the combat order. For this example we will assume the gnome has a 12 initiative and the half-orc has a 5 initiative.)
After the keen half-orc noticed the gnome's attempt at sleight of hand, and called him a cheating sonuvabitch and drew his axe, all hell broke loose in the bar. The half-orc, furious at having to play against a cheater, bore down against our gnome friend, but he reacted quicker.
HP 22
AC 15
Move Draw Concealed Pistol
Standard Attack
12 (nat.) + 7 (bonus) = 19 Attack
19 Attack > 18 AC
5 Bludgeoning & Piercing Damage
It is up to the DM whether or not he wants to give out information such as opposing ACs and the like, but for the sake of quick combat, they will usually provide a number to beat to allow for players to know if they should roll damage or not.
